Study in the UK and keep your family with you.
Most master’s students lost the right to bring dependants in 2024. Research degrees kept it. An MRes can be the bridge.
- Spouse and children
- Research programmes only
- Rules since January 2024
What changed in 2024
For courses starting on or after 1 January 2024, the UK Home Office restricted dependant visas. Students on most taught master’s degrees, such as an MSc or MBA, can no longer bring a partner or children. The exception is students on postgraduate courses designated as research programmes, such as a PhD or a qualifying research master’s.
What is an MRes?
Dependants on a student’s visa can usually work in the UK, which helps many families manage living costs. Children can attend state schools.
Frequently asked questions
How much extra money do I need for dependants?
The Home Office sets a maintenance amount for each dependant, which depends on where you study. We’ll calculate it for your city.
Is an MRes harder than an MSc?
It’s different. You need to be comfortable working independently and writing a substantial thesis.
Can my spouse work full time?
Under current rules, dependants of eligible students can generally work. Check GOV.UK for any conditions that apply.
