Nursing in the UK 46-second Short

Your UK visa is ending. Going home isn’t the only option.

If you hold a degree and already work in a UK care home or social care, an MSc Pre-Registration Nursing programme can be a legal, structured route to becoming a registered nurse.

  • Around 2 years
  • Care experience valued
  • Leads to NMC registration
  • No nursing degree needed

Who this route is for

Many graduates from Kerala reach the same crossroads in the UK: their Graduate (post-study work) visa, dependant visa or care-sector Skilled Worker visa is nearing its end, and they don’t want to return to India. If you have a recognised degree and hands-on experience in a care home, nursing home or the social care sector, a pre-registration MSc in Nursing is worth a serious look.

  • Graduate visa holders who want a long-term career rather than another short-term job.
  • Dependants who have been working in care and want a profession of their own.
  • Care workers on Skilled Worker visas looking for a route into registered nursing.

What an MSc Pre-Registration Nursing is

It is a postgraduate programme, usually around two years, for graduates who are not yet nurses. You combine university study with clinical placements in hospitals and the community. On completing an NMC-approved programme, you can apply to join the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) register, usually in Adult, Child or Mental Health nursing.

Postgraduate levelBuilds on the degree you already have, in any subject that meets the university’s entry rules.
Clinical placementsReal experience on hospital and community placements is built into the course.

How the visa side works

You would normally need a Student visa to start the course. Whether you can switch from inside the UK depends on the visa you hold now. Since January 2024, most taught master’s students cannot bring dependants, so families need to plan carefully. Once qualified and registered, many nurses move on to Skilled Worker sponsorship with an NHS trust or a private healthcare employer.

Check before you apply: entry requirements, English scores, funding and visa switching rules all vary and change. We check your degree, care experience and visa dates before recommending a course.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a nursing background?

No. Pre-registration programmes are designed for graduates who are not yet nurses. Universities look at your degree, your care experience and your motivation.

Can I apply from inside the UK?

Many people can switch to a Student visa from inside the UK, but not every visa type allows it. We check your current visa before you apply.

How early should I start?

Ideally six to nine months before your visa expires. Courses have fixed intakes, and you need an offer and a CAS before your current visa runs out.
