Is UK nursing still open to Indian nurses? Yes, through more than one door.

Your qualification and registration status decide which route fits. Here are the three main options we discuss with nurses from Kerala.

  • CBT + OSCE
  • NMC PIN
  • BSc top-up for GNM
  • Pre-registration MSc

How NMC registration works for overseas nurses

Internationally educated nurses join the UK register through the NMC’s Test of Competence. It has two parts: a computer-based test (CBT), which you can sit in India, and a practical OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination), which is held in the UK. You also need to meet the NMC’s English language requirement. Pass both, complete the registration steps, and you receive your NMC PIN.

Route 1: Sit the OSCE yourself

With direct recruitment from India slowing, some nurses no longer wait for an employer to bring them over. UK visitor rules allow you to visit for up to six months to take the OSCE, with a letter from the NMC confirming your test booking. Once registered, you can look for a Band 5 role with a sponsoring NHS trust or private employer and switch to a Skilled Worker visa.

The NMC lists approved OSCE providers including the University of Northampton, Ulster University and Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. Oxford Brookes has also been a centre, subject to its planned 2026 closure.

Route 2: BSc top-up for GNM nurses

If you hold a GNM diploma, a one-year BSc (Hons) Nursing top-up in the UK can bring your qualification to degree level, which some employers and registration routes prefer.

Route 3: Pre-registration MSc Nursing

For graduates who want to retrain fully in the UK system, a pre-registration MSc combines study with clinical placements and leads to NMC registration on completion.

There is no one-size-fits-all route. Your qualification, experience, English score and finances decide which option makes sense. We assess your profile before recommending one.

Frequently asked questions

Can I really take the OSCE on a visitor visa?

Yes. GOV.UK guidance lists taking the OSCE as a permitted activity for Standard Visitors, for visits of up to six months. You’ll need your NMC test registration letter.

What English score does the NMC need?

The NMC accepts IELTS (Academic) and OET at set minimum scores. Check the NMC website for the current requirement before you book.

Can I work in the UK while on a visitor visa?

No. You cannot work on a visitor visa. You need a job offer and a Skilled Worker visa after registering.
