No student visa. No dependant visa. A direct route to the NHS.
Experienced nurses can travel to the UK to sit the OSCE, register with the NMC and join the NHS as a Band 5 nurse. Here is the process in order.
- English test
- CBT
- OSCE in the UK
- Band 5 role
The route, step by step
- Pass an approved English test. The NMC accepts IELTS (Academic) and OET at set minimum scores.
- Start your NMC application and confirm your nursing qualification and registration are eligible.
- Sit the computer-based test (CBT). This first part of the NMC Test of Competence can be taken at test centres in India.
- Book and sit the OSCE in the UK. UK visitor rules allow a visit of up to six months to take the OSCE, with your NMC booking letter.
- Receive your NMC PIN once you pass and complete the registration steps.
- Secure a sponsored job as a Band 5 nurse and apply for a Skilled Worker visa.
Tips for passing the OSCE
- Practise every station under timed conditions.
- Learn UK documentation and patient-communication standards, not just clinical skills.
- Use the NMC’s own candidate guidance and approved test-centre resources.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a job offer before the OSCE?
Not if you travel as a visitor to sit it yourself. Many nurses who are sponsored by an employer sit the OSCE after arriving instead.
How many times can I retake the OSCE?
The NMC sets limits and waiting periods for resits. Check the NMC’s current rules before booking.
Can you help me find an employer?
We guide you through registration and the visa process, and advise on applying to sponsoring employers.
